Diane Abell Bio
I started my photography "career" as a student of landscape architecture at SUNY College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry in Syracuse, NY in the mid 1980's. At that time, having a camera was simply a tool of the trade. My first SLR was a Ricoh KR-10, a workhorse of a camera that managed to get the job done. I took an elective course in photojournalism photography at Syracuse University, and my passion was born. At that time, my favorite subjects, aside from landscapes and gardens, were my kids. I shot almost exclusively in B&W and did my own processing and printing.
However, my passion for nature photography wasn't realized until I got my first digital camera, an Olympus C2100. I did pretty well with that little P&S, eventually moving up to a Panasonic FZ30 just last winter. That was a nice camera, and I did fairly well with it, but the image noise inherent in that camera really bothered me. Unfortunately (at the time), I managed to destroy the FZ30 in a boating accident at work in the spring of 2006. But, in turning lemons into lemonade, I replaced it with my first digital SLR, a Nikon D50.
In my present position as a landscape architect/park planner for the National Park Service at Fire Island National Seashore, I am afforded with some fabulous photo opportunities, both on the job and personally. It's wonderful to actually use my passion for photography within the context of my job. And, having so recently moved up to a digital SLR, a whole new realm of photography is now open to me. NWPLI provides me with fabulous learning opportunities, having both passionate and capable amateur photographers, as well as skilled professionals.
